Xmas 'tapes

Merry Christmas

Well another year draws to a close and it's been a phenomenal year of music. Dubstep rose up out of the underground, Justice, Crookers & Fake Blood tore into our ear's with electronic ferocity, Little Boots stole our hearts, we learned to love Soulwax just that little bit more and promoters who jumped onto the music festival bandwagon promptly fell off as punter's clung to their hard earned cash attempting to avoid the serious raping from the banks.

It'll be interesting next year to see how the already troubled music industry fair's in the wake of this financial crisis. Hopefully most of you haven't been caught up and suffered too much by the situation. It's been a good and bad year for many reasons and there are heaps of other brilliant thing's in music I could divulge in but I'll keep this short. I just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and an awesome New Year. I'd like to thank everyone who submitted material for me to listen to, DJ with and blog this year, keep it coming.

Now to the music. Here are a selection of recent mixtapes which have really caught my ear's for one reason or another. If you're already itching to get your groove on for NYE then get yourself into these to pass the time away.

If you're into jackin' energetic electro mixtape's and DJ set's then I highly recommend you listen to this first offering from fellow music blog Vous y etes !*.

Last but not least here's an eclectic mix from Switzerland's Wildlife!. He host's his night 'Safari' at the Wasserwerk Club, Switzerland and has previously billed the likes of Diplo, South Rakkas Crew and Boy 8-Bit to play and Sinden and Riva Starr will be making guest appearances over the Christmas and new year period. Check out the interview with the man himself over at Fairtilizer.com. Here's the press release which accompanied the mixtape in my mailbox.

"Once again following his passion for Jamaican music, he hits us with a 60 minute mix of dancehall flavoured electronica gems. Starting off with some heavy dupstep wobblers, before moving over to signature tropical-electro-punk, "digital dancehall" and "yardtek" bangers from all four corners of the planet..."

Oh and be sure to check out his Fundamentals mixtape which features "a fine blend of punk rock, reggae, hiphop and of course dancehall classics all presented in a smooth "radio-like" fashion, in more or less chronological order as to how they appeared in his life... up close and personal!"

Big Fat Trouble

Big Fat Trouble

A couple of weeks ago, after a late DJ set in Shoreditch I headed down to The End to catch the last ever Chew The Fat night to be held there before it closes it's doors in January. It was my first time at a CTF event and man, I wasn't disappointed. I got there just as SebastiAn had taken to the decks in the main room and it was heaving. After a little scout around to the lounge to check out Mowgli and grab a beer or three I proceeded to dance my way well into the early hours.

I've never seen SebastiAn live and his set was alternative to say the least. As well as his distictive dark grinding electro he proceeded to drop and sample while changing the tempo, basicly stearing well clear of a constant driving beat which, was refreshing to say the least. My highlight being the drop of a track by The Strokes, the title of which I can't put my finger on this long after the event but hey it was was pretty damn awesome. The next thing I know it's 6am and we're being ushered to the cloakroom que. Amazing!

Anyway Chew The Fat! are back on the 20th of December alongside Trouble Vision to bring you Big Fat Trouble an Christmas party with a pretty damn fine line up featuring Herve, Zomby, Trevor Loveys, Disco Of Doom, Boy 8 Bit to name a few. The event is also being ran in association with Timeout magazine, who have chosen Chew The Fat! as one of their future five nights in London.

VERY limited advance Tickets available here: www.wegottickets.com
or here: www.thefatclub.com

For a taster of the nights proceedings here's an early '08 mix from Zomby.

Recession? pffft what recession?

If you've saved up a few quid for a rainy day and the current recession mean's nothing to you other than your butler keep's asking for extra shifts then you might be interested to know that DJ Mr.C (From Shamen / The End / Superfreq / Plink Plonk fame) is selling his entire House music & Techno music record collection including music from 1985 to June 2008 on Ebay.

"Selling the entire collection individually would bring somewhere in the region of £150,000.00 - £200,000.00 but due to Mr.C's desire to keep the collection together, he'll part with the whole collection for a knock down price of £75,000.00 as a minimum bid."

There is 5 members in CulNSweet- DJ Teenage Wolf, Mario Barrio, Cory Blaine, DJ Orion and me. Where did the name CulNSweet come from and what does it mean?
I think Mario Barrio thought of it while getting blzd one day, it simply means Cul N Sweet :p

Do you have a residency anywhere or play at regular events?
We have a residency at this club called Moods where we DJ every Thursday! plus the CulNSweet party's we try to throw every month, for those we try to find a new location for each party!

Which DJs/acts have you played alongside at previous events?
DJ assault, DJ fame, Congorock, Scott Cooper, Bang Gang DJs, Dre Skull, Juiceboxxx, Yo Majesty and Egyptrixxx are some of them.

Do you produce any material or remix other artist's tracks as well as Dj?
So far I've only made bootlegs of some tracks but I only keep them to myself to play out live. I recently just started producing some bass heavy stuff that I will be posting up soon! So watch outtt :p

Do you VooDoo?

Another top lineup happening this Friday is VooDoo at The Last Days Of Decadence. Organisers Thick As Thieves are pulling out the stops to fly into London from Berlin the mighty Jesse Rose who will be playing alongside Matt Walsh, We're Not Cool and Lost In Paris. Here's a bit of info for the night:

Headlining this event we have a pretty exclusive and incredibly special set from this months IDJ cover artist, Jesse Rose. The Godfather of the so called "Fidget House" scene, even presiding over Dave "Switch" Taylor and let's face it, that is no mean feat considering the level of Switch's productions over the last couple of years whilst Jesse has been surprisingly quiet.
However, with a new wave of production on the way out, including the rather excellent "Take It To The Club" with Action Man (AKA Herve) and Forget My name featuring the boys from Hot Chip he looks set to become the shining star of the House scene he was always destined to be, IDJ's cover piece reading, "The jet set story of a new house heavyweight."
This man, now based out in Berlin, a strong influence in his musical style, plays in the UK only rarely these days so take the opportunity to explore a fantastic new venue to the rare treat of Jesse Rose back in the capital.

Having shared bills with everyone from Tiga and Erol Alkan to Carl Craig and Ivan Smagghe via Klaxons and Dixon (Innervisions) Matt Walsh is Turbo Recordings superstar DJ in the making and our other special guest this fine November. Snapped up by Tiga after doing his thing in T-Bar a little while ago Matt Walsh has proven himself to be one of the best DJs the country has to offer. Alongside this Matt has also taken to producing under the name Clouded Vision alongside Steve Cook, see Brodinski's and Moby's recent 12" singles on Turbo for some of their more recent remix work. You will not regret it.

Introducing: Meterhead

A couple of weeks back I discovered an act going by the name of Meterhead. The only thing I could find out about them was that they are based in Los Angeles so, I decided to find out a bit more about them but after I sent the following questions over I'm still no wiser. All I do know is that they make great music.

So who are the members of Meterhead?
We are based out of Los Angeles, but 1 of us lives in north cal... We prefer to remain nameless.

How long have you been Djing?
Since the early 90's.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
Anthing from Rick Astley and early Huey Lewis and the News.

Do you have any residencies or events you organise or play regularly as Meterhead or individually?
No...nobody wants to hire us.

You've used quite a few illustrations of Motorhead's Lemmy on your EP covers, what's the story there?
We're hoping Lemmy will sue us.

How/when did you first begin making music?
As soon as we saw back to the future and heard "The Power Of Love" by Huey Lewis And The News.

Do you prefer to remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
A little of both, remixes are easy to get out there but expect much more originals in the near future.

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
The Melvins because they rule and will make us sound good.

Where do you see yourselves in 10 years time?
On an island with ya mamma.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Doing this interview.

What are your plans for 2009?
To come to the UK and sleep on your couch...can we?

Yet again, apologies for lack of posts recently. Real work sucks. Here's some mixtape's that have been entertaining me over the past week or so for you to get your teeth into.

First up is this mixtape from California's DJ Mutt. Usually producing and dabbling in the tempo of Hip Hop, he's taken time out to gather some of his favorite electronic tracks and mix the later into this pumping mixtape.

Next up is this bumping mix from David Merron. Last time I posted about Merron it was in promotion for his boat parties but these were unfortunatly canceled after an energetic set lead to one of the speakers going overboard. Anyway, this lead him to concentrate more on the music and after a couple of whiskeys he produced this fine example of a mixtape.

The next mixtape is a little different to the others. It's a collaboration between producers The Kickdrums and League Crew sampling the production and mixing talent's of both groups to promote the upcoming Kickdrums debut indie rock album, "Detached... At Ease" due out this December. There's more info over at The Kickdrums myspace and after a brief read these guys mean business after haveing already made some serrious production's for the likes of 50 Cent, M.O.P., Chamillionaire, Talib Kweli and John Legend to name a few.

Last but not least is my favorite mix of the bunch from Audio Racquet which is George O'Connor's new project with Adam Ashleigh. Its a quality high energy jackin' mixtape from start to finish featuring a lot of new tracks I'm certainly unfamiliar with. Definatly one to get you hyped for the weekend.

Introducing: Blende

Johan K is a young Swedish electro and techno producer and DJ working under the name of Blende whose career started in late 2006 when his first EP was released on German label Plasmapool. Since then he has gone from strength to strength gaining support from the likes of Klaxons, MSTRKRFT, Justice, Alan Braxe, D.I.M, LA Riots, Laurent Garnier, Punks Jump up, James Zabiela and DJ AM.

So how long have you been Djing?
On and off for about 10 years. I started out back in 97 playing music for myself, and consequently my mother, in my old boy room growing up in Stockholm, although I don’t think she was ever that impressed with it, haha. My friends and I also used to put on small private events and run clubs at small bars around Stockholm, but they were all pretty big failures come to think of it. However since moving for the third time to London in 2005 I’ve been pretty much doing it non-stop.

Where did your DJ name come from?
Blende comes from the name Blende Music, which I invented together with a friend of mine whom I used to make music together with when I first started out. It was literally the two of us just trying to come up with a bunch of names and choosing the one that sounded the least corny. And clearly we failed, haha.. But when he lost interest in the whole thing a few years ago I continued on my own and just removed the “music” part. I hate the name though to be honest, but it’s too late now anyway.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
Oh, that was probably back in 94 when I first heard Prodigy’s second album ‘Music for the jilted generation’, it was different from anything else I had heard but I was very into bands like Rancid and NOFX back in those days, so it still felt quite natural to listen to at the time.. Back then Adam Beyer and Cari Lekebush pretty much set the bar for the Swedish techno scene, so that’s what got me completely into dance music. Although when Daft Punk came around in 96 that was also something that blew me completely away, like for any other kid at the time I guess.

How/when did you first begin making music?
Well, as anyone else who has tried can relate to more or less, it’s very hard to get gigs just being a DJ. So, fed up with it and realizing you need to release some music to get any gigs, in early 2003 I bought myself a copy of Propellerhead’s Reason and sat down with a friend and started making beats. We didn’t have a clue what we were doing, but somehow managed to get a few songs onto compilations and a few remixes straight away almost. But admittedly it sounded horrible back then, we wanted to do house music but could only make chill out beats. It’s amazing I didn’t just give up the whole thing, haha. Eventually I got bored of the down-tempo stuff and tried making a bit more energy filled music. It took me a few years though to actually come up with something I was happy with and that sounded even remotely what I wanted it to sound like.

Describe your sound in 3 words?
Not. Fucking. Breaks.

Do you prefer to remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
Remix other artists. By a mile. It’s so much easier to complete a remix for some reason rather than an original production, even if you in the end only use a hi-hat or something from the original. I have no idea why. I guess it might have to do with that you are under a certain amount of pressure working with a deadline. Completing an original song that you are happy with is ten times more pleasurable though!

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
I actually have a friend of mine who is about to become part of Blende, or unofficially for now anyway. The plan is for us to set up a live show together and also he will co-write a lot of the music in the future. I think we complete each other very well so it’s kind of a win-win situation for the both of us. But that’s not the answer you wanted I’m sure, haha. So – Prince anno -87, if he could do a falsetto type vocal for me.

What are your opinions on the Swedish music scene?
Err, maybe a lot of people from Sweden would disagree, but absolutely horrible! It’s too one-sided the way I see it. I really don’t get it. There is far too much minimal in the clubs, it’s beyond me that people haven’t gotten bored of that yet. And the people who used to write such nice music just a few years ago have now also gotten into minimal, more or less. But I’m sure something will come up sooner or later though that is a bit more interesting, it has to!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Still making music but hopefully not having to dj that much. I like it, but not a big fan of traveling so I would like it if I could survive on production solely. So hopefully that, and if not I’ll just have to think of something else I guess. Chef!

What was your highlight of 2008?
It hasn’t had anything to do with music I’d say. Not to say there haven’t been great times though in regards to DJing this year. Playing in one of Seoul’s biggest venues would have been quite a nice experience I reckon, but I missed a connecting flight and subsequently the whole thing.. bah

What are your plans for 2009?
I have lots of plans actually, but nothing is completely set yet. But it looks like I will be going to the US for a tour and then off to Australia, and that’s just within the first two months of the year. And also I might be writing an album for a label that is a bit bigger compared to the ones I’ve done original work for in the past. So 2009 is so far looking pretty good I’d say

Introducing: StadTkind / Le Batman

Hailing from Milan Italy, producer and remixer StadTkind has been producing for about 8 years more recently finding his forte for broken, jacking french house. His producing alias changes from month to month but I'm sure you'll agree if he sticks with what he's got productionwise he's got the tallent to go far.

Where did your DJ name come from?
Um... actually I change name quite often, mainly because I never know which one to choose. StadTkind came from the famous Ellen Allien tune, LeBatman is the name of a track I've produced recently (that contains a sample from 1966' Batman tv series), it sounded good so I decided to use it as name also. But anyway I am bored of names, I have changed tons of names in the past. I used to do graffiti also, and it was the same, tons of different tags :D I think everything and everyone in the world should be nameless, I don't care if people are conscious that is me playing that tune and you playing another one. It's just someone playing something good! There's no need to identify things I think. So I change name sometimes, it depends on the tracks, every sound suggests a name maybe. Now I'm using LeBatman as name but maybe next week I'll call myself Fat Fighter or whatever.

Can you name a record that first sparked your interest in dance music?
Mmm... about dance music my first love has been french house music, when I was 14 or 15 I started listening to Daft Punk, Modjo, Cassius and so on. I think the first time I ever heard that kind of music was on a bootleg Cassius DJ set I downloaded somewhere (maybe Audiogalaxy. lol! Years years years ago), the set started with Mothership Reconnection by Daft Punk.. a tune I still damn love. Love at first sight man!

How/when did you first begin making music?
Um... that's funny, I started doing electronic music eight or nine years ago. I have always loved any kind of music so it was natural for me to try to make something. At the beginning I was more ambient/big beat oriented, I was inspired by Orbital and Fatboy Slim and stuff like that. Then I moved a bit towards experimental music, something like ambient or dub. All things I've produced at that time are totally crap, I don't remember which software I was using but all that stuff damn sucks aha. I never tried to promote myself at that time, not even my friends knew I was doing that! Then I started making some dance music, five or six years ago... and I was a bit better on that, some friends enjoyed that stuff, but then I get bored and stopped for some years, the last things I produced date back in 2003 or 2004. Then last summer I opened a Myspace page (not as musician), just to add some friends... but I felt I wanted to start again doing music, so here I am now!

Do you prefer to remix other artists tracks or produce original material?
They're both funny in a different way... I usually do one when I get bored of the other. But anyway I never produce any 100% original material... I always sample a lot, so in some way I always need some inspiration from other artists, by remixing them or by using some samples. Anyway for the moment I prefer more producing some original material. But there's a couple of remixes coming on...

Who would you most like to work with on a track and why?
I would like to work with many artists... maybe with some Italian new wave and Italio disco artists such as Koto or Krisma or Righeira Brothers, they are all still producing with the same taste they had at that time. If you listen to them you'll see the difference between be inspired from a kind of music and be the creator of that, it sounds always as they are deeply and truly knowing what the are doing. And I also would love to have the voice of Benjamin Diamond singing something for me.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Um... Maybe teaching cinema studies at university or maybe heading the Coachella 2018. Who knows :D

What was your highlight of 2008 so far?
Um... talking about music, as a clubber I have been to many amazing sets this year and I've been to a wicked dance festival in Spain. There was Uffie playing there and I had to chance to verify that she's not that hot. I think she's getting fat, but maybe it was the lights I don't know. As a producer it has been nice to see people enjoying what I am doing... in less than four months I have got many enthusiastic feedback and many DJ's asking me tracks to play. That's nice!

What are your plans for 2009?
Start a cinema studies doctorate, be interviewed by Cahiers du Cinéma about my thesis and play as much as possible all over Europe.

Tell me an interesting fact about yourself?
I am writing a thesis about a 12-hours french movie of the 70's. And I have a damn idiot tattoo on my belly lol.

This Friday I'll be digging out my finest Movie Soundtrack's to mix together in a DJ set down at The Freelance Hellraiser's new night Straight To Video at The Last Days Of Decadence. I'll be playing under the Tapeheads alias alongside a good friend of mine who I used to share the decks with tearing up house parties back in Uni days.

The night revolves completely around playing tracks from the movies so expect a mash-up of tracks from Hip-Hop to House to New Wave. Kind of 2 Many DJ's, DJ Yoda and DJ Z-Trip all in one. You'll hear anything from Pulp Fiction to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure to Top Gun to Beverly Hills Cop to... you get the picture? Getit?.....(sigh). Alongside residents The Freelance Hellraiser, The 20th Century Fox, Osymyso there will also be a set by The Ha Ha Sisters, basically get yourself dressed to kill 'cause we're gonna have one hell of a party!

Anyway, Radio 1's Rob Da Bank invited The Freelance Hellraiser and Osymyso onto his show over the weekend to do a special 2 hour Halloween mixtape in preparation for this Friday. You can re-listen to the show again here:

Designer Drugs

Apologies for the lack of posts over the past week or so, I've been super busy working, partying, working, throwing up, working, dancing, etc. leaving me more or less looking like a cast member of the living dead. I'm currently trawling through my emails at work since BT are such cock's it takes them a month to reconnect my phone/ internet after being 'accidentally' cut off so, expect updates soon. Eugh.

Anyway, this week is Halloween which brings me nicely onto this original track by blog favorite Designer Drugs. It's officially out tomorrow along with their new track Back Up In This.
