Well, further to my previous prediction, Soulwax were the very special guest at Durrr last night, and they tore the roof off with a storming Nite Versions set playing for just over an hour. What more could you ask for? a rare chance to see the Dewaele brothers and co at such an intimate venue and all for £4! Brilliant! So, today was a bit of a struggle at work but it was worth it.

Heres a little treat I found via the Put The Needle On The Record blog, a Soulwax mixtape dubbed with samples of various presenters of Belgium's Studio Brussel radio station in classic 2 Many Djs style:

Soulwax mixt Studio Brussel.mp3 (zshare)

Also djing was Arveene who is one of Ireland's premier dj's who played a blinder of a set to finish off the night. He has previously toured with The Prodigy and Nightmares on wax and is currently working with fellow producer Misk on new material with Yo Majesty. Check out this recording of his set at Durrr from back in July:

Some other good news, my tshirt's have been featured over on the death-by-tshirt blog. Check it out. You can purchase one for your very own right here.

Check out the brilliant artwork of freelance artist Karl Kwasny aka Monaux of Brisbane, Australia. He has a very impressive client list boasting, among others, the likes of Faesthetic, Coca Cola, The KDU, Don't Panic, Mooks and Von Zipper.
Be sure to check out his personal work as well for some gorgeous pencil illustration.

Secret 'Soulwax' Guest???

Durrr (formerly Trash) have just posted a bulletin about monday night's lineup which includes a special guest:

"Ok I am allowed to hint at the live act because their other show is sold out now...they are old friends (played Trash) and their name begins with S."

Soulwax Nite Versions @Trash
Soulwax Nite Versions @Trash 26th September 2005 pic:Heike Schneider-Matzigkeit

Using the power of deduction, my guess is that the guest is Soulwax since their other 'London' show is sold out 3 days later, as well a good few of their other UK performances.

Oct 25 Festival, Brighton (Tickets Available)
Oct 26 Ambassador, Dublin (Sold Out)
Oct 27 Warehouse Project, Manchester (Sold Out)
Oct 28 University, Leeds (Tickets Available)
Oct 29 Durrr @The End, London ??????
Oct 31 Academy, Glasgow (Sold Out)
Nov 1 Koko, London (Sold Out)
Nov 2 Nation, Liverpool (Tickets Available)
Nov 3 Secret Location, Newcastle (Tickets Available)

Guess all we can do is go to find out. I know I will be. Digitalism last time was amazing! Any other suggestions of who it could be are welcome.

When Saints Go Machine

Last week I discovered 'When Saints Go Machine' via a remix by HiJack which has been rattling my speakers ever since. WSGM hail from Copenhagen, Denmark and have been making some of the freshest synth pop sounds and attracting the remix tallent's of Moulinex, James Braun and Mr.Brown to name a few. Their sound is pop and synth in equal measure, in some cases a bit N.E.R.D or Midnight Juggernauts in the production but individual never the less.

'3's & 7's'

Possibly my most favorite band; Queens Of The Stone Age sent a mailing list email out this morning promoting their new video for 'Battery Acid'.

Their last album 'Era Vulgaris' has taken a lot longer to grow on me than the others have but this song is one of the better ones, especially when performed live. I didn't really make much of the video but I loved the look and direction of '3's & 7's' (above).

I still think nothing could ever beat the beauty of the 'Go With The Flow' video:

Good For Nothing

A couple of months back I discovered 'Good For Nothing' podcast series and I haven't stopped listening since. The site and podcast publishing is run by Loïc Hubert who also dj's for the series and he has featured the likes of Tim Sweeney, Busy P, Justice, Trevor Jackson, Padded Cell and Alexander Robotnick, among others. The cast's by Hubert himself are more focused on left field house and disco whereas his guests play anything from classic motown and funk to contemporary house and electro.

The recent Alexander Robotnick cast has been getting some heavy rotation on my ipod recently but others to look out for are the Trevor Jackson & Justice cast's along with of course, Hubert's own.

"Bang Gang... thats so Sydney"

Thee Bang Gang
Jamie Doom, DJ Damage, Ajax & Gus Da Hoodrat

This Thursday the UK will see the return of Ajax, Gus Da Hoodrat and Jamie Doom, three prominent members of the Sydney Dj collective: The Bang Gang. They are over here promoting the recent LSD (Light Sound Dance) mix cd out on Modular records with an extensive euro tour. Thursday they will be blowing the minds of the geordie's in Newcastle and Friday they are hosting a room with Modular at Fabric with Para One, Busy P, Surkin, Walter Meego and The Glimmers which, will be awesome!

I first saw these guys when I was living in Sydney in '05 and they knew how to party. With their eclectic sound of beats, breaks and electro housed in Club 77 (one of the dirtiest clubs I have ever seen), it drew in the gay/straight fashion crowds of Sydney and beyond so much so that the queue would start way before the club even opened.

After hosting weekly Friday night parties at Moulin Rouge then Club 77 and playing almost every promo party in between, they took a break and played monthly at Honky Tonks (now Third Class) in Melbourne.

Now they seem defiant on bringing their sound to a wider audience and have already toured the US, UK and Europe supporting the likes of the Klaxons and Daft Punk at this summers UK festivals.

Try and catch them if you can for a taste of the Aussie dance scene. After all, Ajax has been voted Australia's No.1 dj in '06 along with a host of other accolades.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

Back in the summer of 2006 I stumbled across this cheery chap playing on the Vice stage at Lovebox festival. With his uplifting sound and jolly dancing it wasn't long before the seated crowd of about 50 people before him were jumping to their feet and jiving with the rest of us. This was the start of my pilgrimage to see him live whenever I could as, in my mind, this guy was going to be big. The man in question was one Jack Peñate.

Over the last year or so its been great to see this guy grow in popularity and hear his music break into the suitably indie-pop scene. From catching him play at the intimate St Moritz to the sold out Scala, Peñate has gone from strength to strength releasing limited edition 7 inch vinyl's of 'Second, Minute Or Hour' and 'Torn On The Platform'. But it was 'Spit At Stars' that was picked up by radio stations that brought him into the public eye and put him where he is today.

Tomorrow see's the release of his debut album 'Matinee' featuring his singles plus the brilliant 'Got My Favourite' and 'Learning Lines'. Buy his album on the way to work and eliminate those monday morning blues.

...this is the sound of Altern8!

Last night I took the opportunity to check out Altern8 dj at 93 Feet East which was amazing! I grew up listening to them along with the likes of The Prodigy, The Shamen, Utah Saints etc. and since I was too young at the time to take advantage of the rave scene as it grew in the early '90's, I made sure I got my money's worth last night.

They played a lot of classic rave tunes most of which I've heard over the years but never known who the track's were by. Of course dropping classics like Baby D: 'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' and 'Charly' and 'One Love' by the Prodigy but the night wouldn't be complete without their classic which was saved for last:

Altern 8: Evapor8 (Incliner 8 Mix).mp3 (zshare)

Mark Archer, one half of the duo has a live mixtape on his myspace page recorded at Reminiscence in Coventry from 2006. It sounds a bit more hardcore to what they played last night, maybe because there is an M.C., I don't know, but this sums up the sound that has influenced many musicians of the so called 'nu rave' era.

Altern 8 @ Reminiscence - Coventry 28.10.2006 (right click/save as)

The night was primarily the launch party for Spektrum's release of 'Kinda New' which actually came out in 2004, but is getting a second release with additional remixes.

Spektrum: Kinda New (Dirty South remix).mp3 (zshare)

Also playing live were Hunger/Thirst and Kidaswitch. I just missed Kidaswitch's set but saw Hunger/Thirst who were really good. The duo look like a Chemical Brothers tribute group, one sporting the long blonde hair and glasses of Tom Rowlands and the other with short dark hair, Ed Simons style. But don't be fooled by their look, their sound is big and if they played to a festival crowd they would rock it. You can hear their influences from the likes of Justice, SMD, Underworld and indeed the Chemical Brothers but of course they make it sound like their own. Check out their myspace for a couple of their tracks and keep an ear out for them in the future.

A couple of weeks ago I braved the freezing cold snap that hit the UK to finally get to see Digitalism play live at Durrr after missing them at their festival set's in the summer. I queued for an hour and finally got into the warm, grabbed a couple of beers and caught up with Kissy Sell Out (who was there as a patron rather than his usual floor filling Dj role) before the German duo took to the stage.

Playing live Digitalism fuse a selection of their album tracks together with a few surprises, notably samples of: Technotronic 'Pump Up The Jam' and Daft Punk's 'Da Funk' more or less following the example set by Soulwax's Nite Versions. Never the less it was an awesome set and I left satisfied, if not a little eager to see them at a bigger venue. Lucky for me they are currently touring the US and will be back for some European dates in November check their Myspace for details.
